With Chardonnay, Franciscan Estate looks for the sort of richness and opulence that malolactic fermentation and sur lie aging in oak barrels bring. They help to deliver that delicious, creamy complexity for which Franciscan Estate Chardonnay is known. But Chardonnay also needs a foundation and structure for all of that richness and fruit. Minerality is essential. The cooler vineyards in southern Napa Valley, in particular the Carneros District, the soil is dense clay. The result is grapes that offer impressive structure and mineral flair. Pale yellow, flinty mineral notes with hints of pear compote and vanilla bean, followed by toasted hazelnuts and Meyer lemon curd. Lovely, creamy, and vibrant with honeycrisp apple and pear fruit filling the palate. White nectarine and lemon zest lead to a round and generous mouthfeel with a crisp line of minerality.
On the nose, flavors of ripe apple and cantaloupe overwhelm the senses. The bouquet is perfumed with vibrant notes of apricot and honeysuckle. The palate is bright, clean and smooth due to the malolactic fermentation that gives the Pinot Gris weight in the mid-palate.
A classic old vine Zinfandel, this wine pays tribute to its heritage with great structure, concentrated flavor and a long, luscious finish. Aromas of boysenberry, clove and cinnamon are followed by flavors of mixed berries, red licorice, tobacco leaf and mulling spices.
Garnet violet color. Aromas of roasted nuts, latte, and dried berries with a supple, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a zesty, chocolate citrus peel, bacon bits, and earth accented finish with fine chewy tannins. Excellent balance and flavor for a wide range of foods.
Notes of baker’s chocolate, black olive, blueberry pie, lavender and crème brûlée show through in this well-balanced wine that exhibits a hint of licorice on a long, concentrated finish.
